Alfa Group founded in 1989 is one of Russia’ largest privately owned financial and industrial consortiums, with interests in oil and gas production, commercial and investment banking, asset management, insurance, retail trade, telecommunications, mass media, water supply and disposal, as well as other industrial-trade and special-situation investments.
The banking group Alfa-Bank includes Alfa-Bank Russia, Alfa-Bank Ukraine, banks in the Netherlands, Belarus and Kazakhstan, as well as representative offices in Cyprus, the United States and the United Kingdom. Alfa-Bank Russia, the largest private bank in Russia, is the Consortium’s flagship company. The bank provides a full range of corporate, retail and investment banking services, asset management and trade finance, and has a considerable branch network in Russia. Alfa-Bank is one of the Russian banks with the most modern management.
The Consortium includes Alfa-Capital Management Company whose clients include pension funds, insurance companies, corporate Russian and international investors as well as private investors. The direct investment fund management company Alfa Capital Partners, an investment company providing consulting services to direct and real estate investment funds. Alfa Group is also the owner of AlfaStrakhovanie Group, one of the largest Russian insurers with a diversified portfolio of services comprising both comprehensive business insurance coverage and an extensive range of retail insurance products.
Alfa Group, together with Access Industries/Renova, holds a 50% stake in TNK-BP, one of the largest vertically integrated Russian oil companies (in terms of oil production). TNK-BP operates five refineries in Russia and Ukraine and nearly 1,400 gas stations across the two countries.
The Group, through Altimo, has significant investment in cellular communications providers with a wide range of wireless, fixed and broadband technologies, including investments in VimpelCom Ltd. (provides services under the Beeline and Kievstar brands, symbol: VIP on NYSE) and MegaFon. Also, the Group invests in Turkcell, a leading GSM operator in Turkey (listed on NYSE and Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB)).
The Consortium’s other interests include X5 Retail Group N.V. (listed on LSE, symbol FIVE), which holds Pyatyorochka, one of the largest discount grocery retailers in Russia in terms of sales, Perekryostok, the largest supermarket chain in Russia, Kopeika, the largest discount grocery store chain, and Karusel, one of the leading hypermarket chains in Russia, and also Rosvodokanal Group, a leading water supply and sewage company in the CIS
